Thankful To Be an Alpha Xi

Sunday, December 1, 2013

The holiday season has begun and with it comes a whirlwind of shopping, baking, and unfortunately, studying for finals. In the midst of all this hustle and bustle it can be difficult to keep sight of what's really important in life.  Luckily for us Alpha Xi's, being surrounded by our wonderful sisters constantly reminds us of our blessings each and every day.  Therefore, in honor of the holiday a few of our sisters took the time to share what they are truly thankful for:

"I'm thankful for my wonderful family because they are all kind-hearted and inclusive. Everyone welcomes step-siblings, half-relatives, and friends into the family and it has made me a better person!"~ Megan Jones

Fall Initiation!

Wednesday, November 27, 2013

On the morning of November 17th, our sisters descended upon the Big Yellow House in a flurry of white to witness the official initiation of the Psi chapter's most recent new member class! After months of anticipation, and a week full of pre-initiation fun, nine ladies were welcomed into our sisterhood.  After the formal ceremony, our newest members were treated to a celebration which included pictures, presents, and brunch with their new Alpha Xi family. For these newly initiated ladies, this cold Sunday morning will be one of the first of many memories they will make during their time as an AXiD.  In honor of the start of their newest journey, we asked our lovely new sisters to share their reasons for choosing the double blue and gold.

Hannah: Alpha Xi really opened my eyes to the college experience. Having so many girls to turn to is amazing, along with having an awesome support system. I never thought I'd join a sorority, but I am so thankful and happy that I did. I love what we stand for and I love being part of something bigger than myself. I've loved everything so far and I can't wait for what's to come!

Dena: On the first day of informal recruitment, I walked into the house so nervous I considered not even going, and left wishing I could stay. When my friends asked me how it went all I could say was "I literally love all of them" and that gets more and more true as my time in Alpha Xi continues! Everyone is so fun and unique and brings something different to the table, and I'm so happy I get to spend the next two and a half years with such amazing girls!

CallaAlpha Xi has become my second home and I never thought that would be possible to find in such a big school. I've loved every minute of everything since I've joined and can't wait for what's next! There are so many opportunities given to make a difference, but also opportunities to make life long friends and find my true self. Joining Alpha Xi was one of the best decisions I've made!

MeganI had debated joining a sorority for awhile, and was lucky to have met some amazing girls in AXiD here at OSU! I could tell from their kind and fun personalities that I was missing out on an incredible sisterhood. So I decided to join and it was great meeting new sisters and learning about the traditions that bring us together. Alpha Xi Delta helps all women realize their potential and I am sincerely grateful to be a sister! TFJ!

MackenzieHaving the opportunity to be a part of Alpha Xi Delta is such a wonderful thing. My new member period and initiation really opened my eyes as to how lucky I am to be surrounded by so many great girls with the same values and interests as myself. I can't wait for all the relationships I will make and the fun I will have with my new sisters!

Calley: Alpha Xi is becoming such a huge and important part of my life more and more every single day and I wouldn't trade it for anything else. This fraternity has already brought out confidence in myself that I have never had before and I already know that I have met some of my best friends in the entire world. I am so happy to get involved in leadership, sisterhood, and Autism Speaks!

KatieI never thought I would join a sorority but I just decided to go for it and AXiD felt like home. I love what we stand for and I have met some incredible girls. Initiation brought that all together and I'm just so happy to be a part of this organization.

Kelly: I immediately fell in love with the girls of AXID on my first visit to the chapter house and knew it was the right sorority for me. I loved going through the process to become an official AXID member and cannot wait for all the memories to be made with all my new sisters!! It is amaXIng! It's a little cheesy but it's the truth!

KelaniI loved initiation. I am so happy to finally be an official AXiD and I'm excited to be a part of such a great fraternity and have so many amazing sisters that I get to do amazing things with, like support Autism Speaks!

A's All Around

AXiD's from the Fisher College of Business!
This past week, the Psi Chapter of Alpha Xi Delta honored a few of Ohio State's most influential professors at our first ever Academic Banquet.  Members of the chapter were asked to nominate university professors  who have gone above and beyond to instruct, inspire, and facilitate success in the classroom.  These professors were then recognized at the banquet, of which the highlights included heartfelt speeches delivered by senior Alpha Xi's to their respective faculty guests, and let's be honest, the wonderful array of delicious food. After recognizing these guests of honor, the spotlight was then placed on our own sisters! Reflective of the successful teaching of OSU's professors, 51 AXiD's were applauded at the banquet for being named to the Dean's List last spring.  Among these intelligent and hardworking ladies, 7 achieved impressive 4.0 GPA's!  Awards for Most Improved GPA were then awarded to Kristen Reymann, for posting the largest GPA increase among the chapter, and Sammi DeMarsh and Savannah Moses for having the Most Improved Family GPA. Overall, the event was an incredible success, thanks to the passion of our chapter's Academic Chair Ana Vigil. For the past year, Ana has tirelessly constructed academic plans and study schedules for sisters who are struggling academically. Here's what she had to say about the banquet:
Most Improved GPA

"Besides the amazing football team that we have that draws hundreds of thousands of people to THE Ohio State University, we are a top academically competitive public school. I wanted to come up with a way to show appreciation for both the teachers that work hard to provide us with a top notch education, as well as the women of Alpha Xi Delta who work hard to achieve the grades that they do," Vigil says. "I also wanted to foster a relationship between greek life and academics on campus, because often times greek life gets stereotyped into only participating in social aspects and the other great achievements fall wayside. I think that Alpha Xi Delta places a priority on academics and this is reflected through the number of women we have on the Dean's List, the number of sisters who participate in academic clubs and fraternities, and teaching as TAs. I think that this first banquet was just a stepping stone for bigger and better things to come for our chapter and academics in the future!"

Alpha Xi's Weekend Update

Tuesday, October 8, 2013

Our sisters don't slow down much, if at all. However, we make time for those we care most about.

On Saturday, we were lucky enough to be joined by our fathers for our annual Dad’s Weekend festivities. This year’s event was held at Gooeyz, which proved a great venue for enjoying delicious food while cheering on our Buckeyes! Of course, we love spending time with our sisters. Sharing this experience with our dads made the night even better.

Our chapter functions just like a family, but nothing beats spending time with our favorite fellas.  Not only did they make the trip to Columbus to watch a sporting event with 50+ sorority girls, but they held back the eye rolls when those of us who are aren't exactly football savvy pretended to know whose jersey they were wearing, and even allowed themselves to be photographed in the notorious “sorority squat”.  As goofy and socially awkward as they may sometimes be, our fathers are the reason our chapter is full of amazingly talented, intelligent, and hard-working women.  After all, it takes the best to make XI best!

Frenxi 2013 Scores For Autism Speaks!

Thursday, September 26, 2013

This past weekend, we hosted yet another wonderfully successful Football Frenxi! The annual flag football tournament, which benefits Autism Speaks, saw 43 teams of men, women, Greeks, and non-Greeks converge at Fred Beekman Park.  From the onset of the tournament, each team displayed a thirst for victory so intense you would expect to only find it rivaled in the Hunger Games.  As our sisters cheered and coached from the sidelines, the teams fought to secure a spot in the next round.  Thankfully, the stakes were not the same caliber as the Hunger Games. All players and coaches left unharmed (for the most part).

The final championship games saw Kappa Alpha Theta and Alpha Gamma Delta compete in the women’s bracket while “Show Me Your TD’s” and “Evan’s All Stars” appeared in the men’s.  In the end, Alpha Gamma Delta and "Evan’s All Stars" were named this year’s Frenxi Champions.  But the real excitement came when all playing had commenced and the final fundraising total was announced. After months of organizing chapter walks, booking fields, and leading their sisters in advertising the event, our philanthropy chairs, Keri Ruzicka and Meredith Lynch, saw their hard work pay off in record-breaking fashion.

This year’s Frenxi successfully raised an astounding $2,900 for Autism Speaks! The entire chapter was incredibly proud to be able to donate this impressive sum to such a worthy cause. However, our work with Autism Speaks does not end with Frenxi. All of our sisters are now fundraising to participate in the Columbus Walk Now for Autism Speaks on October 13th! You’ll be sure to see our sisters repping the double blue and gold around downtown Columbus. After all, Autism Speaks and Alpha Xi Delta listens.

Can you spot the Xi?

Wednesday, September 4, 2013

Welcome back! Whether you’re a veteran student or a first year rookie, we hope you share our excitement for the start of a new school year! With summer bucket lists completed, books bought, and awkward tan lines (un)successfully hidden, the ladies of Alpha Xi Delta are ready to begin their fall semester.

Though the return of classes, exams, and that dreaded alarm clock might not seem like your idea of fun, it signals the return of our lovely sisters! After a summer apart, bigs, littles, twins, pledge classes and roommates will all be reunited. And just like that, a rainbow of “ΑΞΔ” lettered clothing will spread across campus.  However, despite how proud each Alpha Xi is to display her letters on campus, our vast supply of tees, sweatshirts, hats, and bags is not endless (as hard as that is to believe). When laundry day does roll around, our sisters are a little more difficult to spot. But have no fear— the women of Alpha Xi Delta are most likely to be found at any of the places mentioned below:

Thompson Library:
Day or night you’re likely to find an Alpha Xi on any of the Thompson’s floors.  Some of our favorite spots include the Grand and Buckeye Reading Rooms (for those who need large, open spaces to study), the Berry Café (snack breaks are essential during a cram sesh), and the 11th floor (you can’t beat that view!).

Resource Room
Tucked into a corner of the Union’s second floor, this room is one of the most indispensible resources available to all OSU students. The ladies of ΑΞΔ are not strangers to the Resource Room’s useful services, which includes low cost access to printing, enlargements, lamination, poster supplies, games, sports equipment, and various books and tip sheets.

Beating the Back to School Blues

Thursday, August 1, 2013

With the first day of classes only three weeks away, most Ohio State
students are frantically finalizing (or in some cases beginning) their preparations to
return to Columbus. Making the transition from relaxing summer break to hectic
school year can be tough for both seasoned upperclassmen and inexperienced freshmen.
This includes the women of Alpha Xi Delta, who each have had their own share of stressful
back-to-school experiences. Here are some of our tips for making the journey back to Buckeye Nation just a little bit smoother.

1. Don’t break the bank when buying books.
Summer break offers the perfect opportunity for finding great deals on textbooks. Avoid the never-ending lines and expensive costs that come with purchasing new books at the bookstores and instead opt to buy used or rent. Better yet, borrow! The university library allows you to borrow books from its archives for free! If a
textbook cannot be found through the library services, rental options are also offered through many bookstores. Not only is this option significantly cheaper than buying new or used books, but it is also much easier to return rented books to the bookstore at the end of a semester than trying to sell books back. It’s the same stress that causes students to sell their unwanted textbooks dirt cheap, so don’t forget to ask around on Facebook, in class, or with friends before making the trip to the bookstore.

2. Keep calm and leave your closet alone.
There is no need to overhaul your wardrobe for college. While it may seem like a great
time to try new styles or trends, stick with what you know. If you have only ever worn
heels to family weddings, there’s a pretty good chance you won’t be wearing them to your
9 a.m. bio lecture. Don’t drop your entire summer savings on a closet makeover if half the clothes will never leave your room. Instead, spend your cash on versatile items that can create new outfits with the clothes you already own. What’s awesome about Ohio State is that the diversity of its student body also applies to their style — so wear what makes you comfortable and save yourself some cash.

3. Make a list and check it twice.
When packing for school, it can be easy to assume that you can simply throw all of the
stuff lying around your room in a suitcase and hit the road. But the truth is, even the most
careful packers need a point of reference. If you want to avoid arriving in Columbus with
only three pairs of shoes and without your hair dryer, start making a list. You’d be surprised to find that taking the time to formulate a packing list actually helps you to remember all the little things that never seem to make it into your suitcase. So instead of waiting two weeks for mom and dad to finally ship all the stuff you forgot, use a list and pack it the first time.

Summertime, And the Livin' is EaXI

Tuesday, July 16, 2013

Our sister Hannah fulfilling her goal of feeding
 her favorite animal, the giraffe!
Summer has arrived and it brings the promise of sun, fun, and a hiatus from your alarm clock.  But, for the ladies of Alpha Xi Delta’s Psi chapter, summer “break” can be just as chaotic as a school semester.

Between jobs, classes, internships and mission trips, our busy Xi’s have little time to lounge in the sun.  Getting that perfect tan takes a backseat this summer as our sisters pursue their ever-growing bucket lists. Whether it’s enjoying a good summer read or fulfilling a lifelong dream of skydiving, these women aren’t wasting any time on the “dog days” of summer.
